The Brief

Celebratory video for the 125th anniversary of Babingtons, the historic tea room at Piazza di Spagna in Rome. Photography by Valerio de Berardinis. Project based in Rome.

The Challenge

Telling 125 years of history in a video that had to be modern yet respect the identity of an institution. Period illustrations, venue footage, food photography — different materials to blend into a single language.

The Solution

Motion graphics on period illustrations animated in After Effects, editing and color correction to integrate live footage and graphics. Compositing with overlays blending past and present.

Babingtons — 125° Anniversario

Babingtons has been at Piazza di Spagna since 1893. Founded by two English women, still run by women today — from the dining room to the kitchen. A place Balthus called "an old friend." For the 125th anniversary they needed a video that would honor this history without turning it into a documentary. I worked on the period illustrations — teapots, cups, Victorian ladies — animating them in After Effects with measured movements. No flashy effects: the graphics enter and exit with the same elegance as the venue. The compositing blends the historic facade with chromatic overlays that bring the past into the present.

Babingtons — raspberry cupcake, food photography and color grading

The 7 teas of Rome, Balthus quotes, the cupcake suspended on a pink background — each element has its own visual register and the editing alternates between them seamlessly. The color grading shifts with the eras: sepia and grain for the origins, saturated clean colors for the present. The music holds it all together.
