Islands

The Brief

Short film directed by Valerio de Berardinis set on the abandoned island of Santo Stefano and on the island of Ventotene. The story revolves around the figure of the Femina Accabadora — in Sardinian tradition, the woman who ended the suffering of the terminally ill. The protagonist is Anselmo De Girolamo, a fifty-year-old widower suffering from seasickness and the pain of living. Produced by MM Productions. Project based in Rome.

The Challenge

Shooting on an abandoned island with a skeleton crew. I covered cinematography, VFX, editing and color — the entire post-production pipeline. The editing had to build narrative tension without ever falling into the macabre, respecting a subject that questions the boundary between mercy and violence.

The Solution

I managed the entire post-production: editing, color grading in DaVinci Resolve and VFX work. The grading plays on desaturated, earthy palettes — the island, the sea, the stone. The editing alternates slow, contemplative rhythms with sharper cuts in moments of tension.

The Result

Selected at the Cannes Film Festival 2016 (Court Métrage). Selected at CinemadaMare and Cerano Film.

Isole (Islands) — Trailer

Santo Stefano is an abandoned island 20 km off the Lazio coast. You can only reach it by sea, and there’s nothing there — just the empty Bourbon prison and the wind. We shot there with a skeleton crew. I handled cinematography, and then everything else: editing, color, VFX. “He hadn’t chosen that job himself, chance had chosen it to relieve all suffering and free the souls. And it had freed many.”
Protagonists of Islands — black and white portrait
The color grading works on desaturated earth tones and grays. The island, the gray sea, the prison stone — everything contributes to a suspended atmosphere. The editing alternates long silences with sharp cuts. It’s not a film that shouts. It’s a film that looks at you and waits. This project is entirely self-produced, with the free participation of all the artists involved. Pure craftsmanship.
